Session Description: This educational workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), highlighting the critical role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in enabling accurate, IP-based emergency call routing. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how NG9-1-1 differs from legacy systems, and how GIS replaces outdated components with spatially-driven data layers. The session includes a discussion on the transitional state, GIS workflow tips, technical guidance for efficient data remediation and a recommended order for correcting key layers such as road centerlines, address points, and emergency service boundaries. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of data validations, with real-world examples illustrating how errors in GIS data can impact call routing and public safety operations. To close, we’ll touch on key updates from NENA document version 3. By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped with practical strategies to support NG9-1-1 readiness and improve GIS data quality across jurisdictions.
