The City of Van Buren, Arkansas Public Works Department is tasked each year with determining which roads to include on the Capital Improvements Projects List. Prior to 2011, there was no analytical process involved with this selection. This resulted in mismanagement of information and poor maintenance records.

Using ArcGIS for Windows Desktop, the GIS Department created a process for inventorying road conditions that is updated yearly. This data is then analyzed to accurately reflect which roads need repair, when the roads need repair, and to estimate the amount of each repair. Resulting in the city being able to budget dollars accordingly and plan for current and future maintenance.
