GIS I - Introduction to GIS - Two Day Class

The City of Longview is hosting a two-day Introduction to GIS course.  This course will introduce GIS concepts and ArcGIS tools used to visualize real-world features, discover patterns, obtain information, and communicate that information to others. Working primarily with ArcMap and ArcGIS Online, you will create GIS maps, explore the data behind the maps, and analyze maps and data as you master fundamental concepts that underlie GIS technology.

What:           UAS in GIS Workshop 

When:           Monday July 24th, Tuesday July 25th and Wednesday July 26th, 3 8-hour days                                                        Start each day at 8:30 am and conclude each day at 5:00 pm                                                                                    with a 30 minute lunch break midday

Capacity:      18 participants. You will have 2 full time, experienced, instructors (J. Scott Sires and Jerry                                  Bartz).

Where:         GIS Lab at Brookhaven College, The Geotechnology Institute, Building H, Room H105. If                                    possible we plan to conduct a flight which may mean we meet a few hours off-campus. 

How much:  $275 per person (subject to alter slightly – this information for you is preliminary to give                                    you a time to plan) 

Takeaways:   Each participant will receive a trial ArcGIS Online account including a trial of Esri’s Drone 2                               Map technology and a flash drive containing collection of materials and relevant web-links.                             Lunch will be provided each day. 

Course Description:  In this workshop participants will explore precise data collection techniques using       pro-summer grade UAS (a platform combined with sensors ) typically applied in geospatial technologies. The workshop will cover basic UAS concepts, designs, and functions, and will provide resources to help navigate implementation of UAS in GIS 

Course Outline:  Overview of GIS Applications for Drones

  • Knowing a drone, BYO (build-your-own) or OTS (off-the-shelf)
  • Safety and Licensing
  • Flight Planning
  • Flight Mission
  • AGOL (ArcGIS Online) Trial Setup with D2M (Drone 2 Map)
  • Processing into Information Products         

Please note this is information as I plan it and I do not expect anything to change however if anything changes I will know asap and will let you know likewise. I will also let you know when we have the availability for you to register.

I hope this workshop is what you are seeking and that you have the time to participate. The class will be held as long as we have 13 participants however if we have less than 13 participants we will have to cancel the offering.
