    ArcGIS Basics I

This two-day training course is designed to meet the needs of people who do not have a GIS background but find themselves working increasingly with ESRI ArcGIS software.  In this course, students will learn the basics of operating ArcMap 10 and data management within ArcCatalog.  Prior knowledge of ArcMap is not necessary, and classes will be small with individual help available from the instructor.  Students need some experience with internet navigation and Microsoft Excel.  Students will leave the training course with knowledge to access data on their own, to create their own cartographic representations of information, and to trouble-shoot potential problems.

    Course highlights

    ·         Map Creation

    ·         Symbology and Classification

    ·         Map Layout Design

    ·         Finding and Accessing Available Data Online

    ·         Joining Tables

    ·         Defining Projection

    ·         Basic Geodatabase Setup

    ·         Digitizing Data / Feature Creation

    ·         Editing Data

    ·         Data Selection and Analysis

    ·         Georeferencing

The course is taught by Pamela Jurney, GISP.  Pamela has an extensive background in education as well as GIS experience.  She taught secondary mathematics for seven years in the public school system, received a master’s of geography from Oklahoma State University (2006), and has been involved with GIS education for rural schools and tribal and local governments.  She is currently the Project Development Director for Cross Timbers Consulting.

There will be lots of hands-on participation, and opportunities to work exercises individually, with your neighbors, and as a class. With this foundation of the basics of Python in place, on the second day we will focus more on using Python for geoprocessing work flows with a special emphasis on using it in the ArcGIS world. As on the first day, there will be lots of hands-on participation and exercises to reinforce the material. By the end of day two, we will be creating geoprocessing scripts from scratch and even wrapping them back into toolboxes.

Day 1 Agenda - Focus on Python
    - Introduction
    - Variables
    - Iteration
    - Conditionals
    - User Defined Functions
    - Python Modules

Day 2 Agenda - Focus on Python for ArcGIS
    - Python Review
    - ModelBuilder Review
    - Basic Geoprocessing Scripts with Arcpy
    - Debugging/Handling Errors from Python and ArcGIS
    - Using Python to work with Geographic Data and Files
    - Field Calculations with Python in ArcGIS 10
    - Python on the ArcGIS 10 Commandline
    - Creating a Python-based ArcTool

    Instructor: Matthew Collier - matt@attributeq.com

Matthew developed his first Python workshop for beginners in 2010 and has since refined and taught the workshop numerous times for academic, government, and industry professionals. His company, Attribute Q LLC, was formed in 2012 to carry this work forwards. Additionally, between 2012 and 2014, Matthew supported water science for the nation with Python programming at the US Geological Survey. Projects included: Automating repetitive geoprocessing in the development of a GIS database for tribes in Eastern Oklahoma; Modernizing a spatially stratified random sampling package into Python/ArcGIS for scientists in the nation-wide NAWQA project; Coding a near real-time flood inundation map for federal collaborators; Teaching ArcHydro basics at the national tribal GIS conference in Albuquerque; Helping develop a near real-time evapotranspiration mapping system for highly productive agricultural pockets in California and New Mexico; Plus, various other smaller projects. Today, Matthew is employed at the Oklahoma 7-Eleven corporation where he is using Python for data wrangling and business intelligence.

    ArcGIS Basics III

This class is an advanced continuation of the ArcGIS Basics I & II classes where concepts of fundamental mapping skills & practices are build on.  Advanced polygon editing, advanced analysis, in depth geodatabase applications along with a detailed look into ArcToolbox are at the core of this class . Applications with the available census data will be worked with along with other variations of data sourcing. The overall class will be very project oriented so each step has a direct purpose, process & result to teach the fundamentals of advanced editing and analysis in ArcGIS.
